Lessons from an Abébélubé.
'Abébélubé' was what we called them.
Who can help us wipe the board?
Aunty I!
Who knows the answer to this question?
Aunty I!
Nominate a class captain
Aunty I!
Abébélubé is a yoruba word used to describe someone who is too forward. An ITK, an oversabi. we called them too-know-know.
frankly speaking they are the boldest people I have met. They didn't need any external motivation, they motivated themselves and were content being their own hype men, even when they answered wrongly or got their asses whopped, by the next class they were on their feets willing to try out something. Despite being driven mad by their oversabi. They were our go to, the ones we readily remembered when we wanted something fixed, we just couldn't forget them.
Then there were us
The ones who secretly wanted to be participate in class activities. The ones who knew the answers to questions but were waiting to be called on. The ones who knew and desired to lead but were waiting for nominations from the goons. This was secondary school. Here it was cool to wait on a hype man. It was cool to make less demands waiting on your needs to be noticed. This was fairytale.
In reality.
while trying to find myself in this large career pool, I realized that waiting on the goons to push you to the spotlight might be waiting a long, long time. For opportunities to drop on laps we must put in a certain level of 'Abébélubism'. We must be ready to be our own hype men because truthful everyone out there is to busy trying to find themselves and may not have time to constantly nominate us for the spotlight .Will you fail because of this? hell no!
The thing is the world is looking for people who are determined, people who will push, shove, scream if need be to achieve their goals. They are looking for people who will be bold enough to nominate themselves for roles. They are looking for people who will demand for a thing as opposed to waiting to be given.
It's foolishness to keep a lighted candle under the table. Take responsibility, light your candle (your gift) and place it where it will best give light to those who need it. Remember it's the responsibility of the person who lights a candle to determine it's location.
Be passionate, desperate and determined, remember that's what God refers to as faith. Remember the story in Luke 5:17-39. Jesus referred to their determination as faith!
Believe in yourself and demand for what you want. Remember it's he who asks that receives Matthew 7 vs 7. So go out today as an Abébélubé, demand for what you want, waiting on a hype man is outdated guys. Be your own hype man. As you are the major motivation you need.
You know how much I love to read your comments, don't forget to like, share and tell us in the comment section how applying a certain level of Abébélubism has helped you.
Love and kisses,
Esther Ibia.
